A world-famous environmental charity, visitor attraction, and educational campus located in Cornwall, England. It is widely celebrated as a massive feat of biological engineering and a global symbol of ecological regeneration. It is built inside a massive, disused china clay pit that was once completely sterile and sat 15 meters below the water table. The founders transformed this industrial scar into a thriving global garden, manufactured 85,000 tonnes of their own soil from scratch using local waste materials
The Iconic Biomes
The project is instantly recognizable by its giant, bubble-like Biomes, which are some of the largest greenhouses in the world. They are constructed from lightweight, inflated layers of a special plastic (ETFE) set in hexagonal steel frames that require no internal supports.
-
The Rainforest Biome: The larger of the two structures houses the largest indoor rainforest in the world. It features a steamy tropical climate, an elevated canopy walkway, rushing waterfalls, and thousands of plants from Southeast Asia, West Africa, and South America.
-
The Mediterranean Biome: This biome emulates the warm, dry climates of the Mediterranean, South Africa, and California. It features orange groves, olive trees, vibrant seasonal blooms, and an outdoor-style terrace restaurant.
-
The Outdoor Gardens: Surrounding the biomes are over 20 acres of beautifully landscaped outdoor gardens showcasing native UK plants and flora that thrive in Cornwall’s mild climate.
Sustainability and Energy
True to its ecological mission, the Eden Project aims to operate as sustainably as possible. In 2023, it became home to the UK's first operational deep geothermal energy well since 1986. Dropping 5 kilometers into the earth, this system harnesses natural volcanic heat from the Cornish granite to heat the biomes and onsite buildings, dropping the site's fossil fuel usage to virtually zero.
More Than Just a Garden
Eden functions as an active social enterprise and cultural hub:
-
Education & Community: It functions as a university campus hosting hundreds of students annually and is the birthplace of The Big Lunch, a massive UK community initiative that brings millions of people together over food each year.
-
The Eden Sessions: During the summer, the outdoor arena against the backdrop of the illuminated biomes transforms into an intimate concert venue. It has hosted legendary acts over the years, including Oasis, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, and Bastille.
-
Adventure: For thrill-seekers, the site features England's longest zip wire (Hangloose Adventure), sending riders soaring 60mph directly over the top of the biomes.
a vibrant, historic port town located on the south coast of Cornwallknown for its deep-rooted maritime history, thriving creative scene, and stunning coastal landscapes, it is one of the most popular destinations in the UK’s southwest.
Falmouth is famous for its natural geography. It sits on the edge of the Carrick Roads (a complex of drowned river valleys) and boasts the third-deepest natural harbor in the world (and the deepest in Western Europe), reaching depths of up to 34 meters.
Maritime History
- Falmouth’s identity is entirely shaped by the sea: Tudor Origins: In the 1540s, King Henry VIII built Pendennis Castle on the headland to defend the wide estuary from French and Spanish invasion. The town itself was formally founded shortly after in 1613 by the Killigrew family.
- The Royal Mail Packets: From 1688 to 1850, Falmouth was the British Empire's central "Packet Station," meaning highly armed mail ships departed from here to global destinations. Because of this, global news often landed in Falmouth first; for example, the news of Admiral Nelson’s victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar was brought ashore here in 1805.
- Sailing Records: It is a legendary launching pad for global explorers. Charles Darwin anchored the HMS Beagle here in 1836 at the end of his world voyage. It is also where Dame Ellen MacArthur (2005) and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston (1969) completed their historic, record-breaking solo journeys around the globe.
Key Attractions & Things to Do
- The National Maritime Museum Cornwall: Located at Discovery Quay, this striking multi-story museum houses a vast collection of boats, historical artifacts, and an underwater gallery looking right into the harbor.
- Pendennis Castle: Run by English Heritage, you can explore the intact Tudor keep, walk the battlements, and see the big guns used as recently as WWII.
- Beaches: Falmouth has several beautiful, family-friendly sandy beaches, including Gyllyngvase Beach (popular for paddleboarding and home to a great beachside cafe), Swanpool, and Maenporth.
- Jacob’s Ladder: A famous set of 111 stone steps built by a local businessman in the 1800s that climbs steeply from "The Moor" (the town center) up to a classic pub overlooking the harbor.
Culture, Food & Festivals
Falmouth is widely considered a foodie’s paradise, specializing in fresh-off-the-boat seafood and traditional Cornish pasties. It hosts massive annual community events that draw crowds from all over Europe, including:
- The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival (June) – The largest free maritime music festival in Europe.
- Falmouth Week (August) – A major sailing regatta combined with street carnivals and concerts.
- Falmouth Oyster Festival (October) – Celebrating the start of the oyster dredging season.
